Eczema is a long-lasting and recurrent allergic condition that causes the skin to develop some areas of itchy and scaly rashes. This condition is associated with recurring inflammation of the skin, and it is non-infectious. Eczema makes the skin to become dry, red, itchy, and scaly. In very severe cases, the skin may weep, bleed and crust over, causing discomfort in those suffering from it. Eczema affects virtually every part of the body, including the face and ears.

Eczema is caused by either internal triggers or external triggers; or a combination of both. Internal triggers include a family history of eczema, asthma or hay fever, and stress. External triggers of eczema may include irritants such as tobacco smoke, chemicals, weather, air conditioning or overheating, and allergens such as house dust mites, molds, grasses, plant pollens, foods, pets and clothing.

The most prevalent symptoms of eczema include moderate-to-severe skin itching, skin rashes, dry, red, patchy or cracked skin, and skin weeping watery fluid.

There are some ways to reduce the symptoms of eczema in both children and adults. The simplest way is to learn what your eczema triggers are and avoiding them. Some other remedies include reduce your stress level, eradicate dust mites in your home, use delicate skin washing powders and detergents, gently pat, not rub, your skin dry with a towel, and avoid rapid temperature changes. In as much as the above can relieve the symptoms of eczema, one must be careful of the foods they take in order not to aggravate the condition. For someone suffering from eczema, there are certain foods you must avoid out rightly or minimize their intake to lower the risk of eczema. Kiwi fruit is a strong acidic fruit that contains high quantities of salicylates and amines. If you are afflicted by eczema or any other type of skin rashes, you should avoid kiwi fruit by all means possible.

Raw tomato has alkaline content and contains lycopene that protects the skin, whereas cooked tomato is highly acidifying, and should be avoided by people with eczema.

Broccoli, spinach, silver beet and kale are generally good for overall health. However, they become very problematic if you have eczema. They can actually worsen the symptoms of eczema because they are also rich sources of salicylates, amines and natural MSG.

Dairy products including, milk, yoghurt, butter and cheese, are among the most common allergy food for people with eczema. Dairy products cause damage to the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, causing tiny holes to allow larger food particles enter the body, resulting in allergic reactions and sensitivities. This is often referred to as the ‘leaky gut syndrome’ by Naturopaths. The medical term used by medical doctors to describe this condition is ‘increased intestinal permeability.’

Avocado can be a healthy addition to your daily diet if you don’t have eczema. Avocado is perhaps the richest source of amines and itch-promoting salicylates which can worsen eczema symptoms. For this reason, those who already have eczema or showing signs of eczema should avoid eating avocado.

Grapes, including wines, raisins, sultanas and grape-containing juices are regarded as triple threats for those suffering from asthma or eczema. This is mainly because of the very rich source of three natural chemicals: salicylates, amines and monosodium glutamate (MSG). Deli meats (including ham, bacon, sausages and flavored meats) are high in saturated fats, flavor enhancers and nitrates- which are a no go area for people with eczema. Beef, pork and deli meats are very acidic once digested and contributes to the daily itch.
